The web hosts worth paying for — and the upsells to skip

Hetzner is the pricing benchmark the rest of the industry quietly hopes you don't compare to. A 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 40 GB SSD, 20 TB egress VPS in Germany or Finland is $4.59/mo — and that's the renewal price too, no introductory games. Network performance and uptime have been excellent across multiple production sites we run there.

The catch: the control panel is functional rather than friendly, and US datacenter availability is limited to Virginia. If you have basic Linux skills and your audience is European or globally distributed, nothing competes.

Kinsta runs every site on Google Cloud's premium tier (the network with peering relationships to every major ISP). For a WordPress site that has to be fast for a global audience, that infrastructure matters more than any plugin you'll install. Daily backups with one-click restore, free CDN included, support that has actually fixed a broken plugin for us at 2 AM.

Pricing starts at $35/mo and scales with traffic. If you're running a business on WordPress, the time saved versus self-managed pays for it almost immediately. If you just have a personal blog, you'll be fine on cheaper shared hosting.

DigitalOcean is the developer's default for a reason. Pricing is predictable (no AWS-style surprise bills), the docs are genuinely good, and App Platform handles git-push deploys for projects that don't need full server control. The mature API and Terraform provider make infrastructure-as-code straightforward.

Egress pricing is fine but not Hetzner-cheap, and managed databases cost more than rolling your own on a Droplet. For US-centric projects with a developer running them, this is the buy.

SiteGround's onboarding is the most polished in shared hosting — domain transfer, WordPress install, and SSL provisioning happen with no friction. Performance on the GrowBig tier is genuinely good for low- to moderate-traffic WordPress sites, and free migrations actually work.

The renewal pricing is the entire problem. $3.99/mo for year one becomes $24.99/mo at month 13. If you can pay for three years up front to lock in the intro rate, the deal is reasonable. Otherwise set a calendar reminder for month 11 and prepare to negotiate or migrate.
